Are the Final Fantasy games all linked together? Or is each game a different story?

None are connected. Just Final Fantasy X and X-2. But there is a story going around that Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII are now connected. There is talk about the life stream in FF X-2. So now they say that FF X came before FF VII. They say that the people of FF X leave the planet that they are from, and go the the planet of FF VII. That the story of FF VII happens hundreds of years after the story of FF X. The only thing the same in all the games are the summons, Chocobos, Cid, and Mogs. Except for FF XII. The names of the summons are all new, and the Mogs are rabbits not bears.

you dont know with Final fantasy, their have been both medieval and futuristic games real time strategy and turn based rpg, i think that other than ffx and x-2 they are all stand alone games, just recently enjoyed Final Fantasy IV for my ds.

Most of the games are not really related to each other. You could play them without having any knowledge of the others. However, there is a series of Final Fantasy VII games that correlate with each other. Crisis Core (PSP) is a prequel to the original FF7 (PSX). It fills up holes from FF7 and helps you understand FF7 better.
There are also characters that make appearances throughout the series such as moogles and chocobos. Also, there is almost always a character named Cid who is usually an owner/creator/pilot of a ship. He is never the same exact character though. Also the names Bigs and Wedge (homage to Star Wars), appear in many of the FF games.
All in all, the FF games are individual games that are not direct sequels or prequels of each other. They are independent of each other. (FFX-2, as you mention, was the first direct sequel.)
